I took a step back as if to shield myself from the shrill scream Isaac was making. He still stared at me as if he couldn’t pull his eyes from my face. Fiona glared at me, trying to pull Isaac behind her. I was trying to get away from the kid, not harm him, and yet, somehow, she seemed to think otherwise.

Poor Kylie stood at the hostess position, next to a tidy black podium where people checked in for seats. An older couple sat on a bench nearby. The place was about half-full, the lunch hour nearly passed.

Not many people were in the bar area, just a young guy sitting at the long counter talking to the bartender, or he had been until Isaac started screaming. As Natalie and I moved to the door, I’d been listening to the pleasant drone of conversation, but that had stopped the minute Isaac started screaming.

Actually, I couldn’t be certain they’d stopped. Isaac’s voice was so loud that fifty drummers could have set up shop in the place challenging each other to a drum-off and I wouldn’t have heard them. If he wanted, Isaac had a future in Hollywood screaming for horror movies.

I felt a hint of magic floating around, trying to latch onto something. I put up a shield against it. Fortunately, there are certain magical protections that feel almost automatic to me. If it hadn’t been nearly automatic, I wouldn’t have been able to do a thing. The screeching seemed to stop all activity in my brain.

I noted Natalie’s hands moving slightly around her like she was brushing off a spider web. She was probably doing her own warding and automatically motioning something out of her way. No doubt she was as rattled as I was.

Finally, Natalie found her voice. “Shut UP!” I felt the force of the spell drift over me. It headed right to Isaac.

“How dare you use magic on my child!” Fiona yelled. Her voice was almost as loud as Isaac’s though she was speaking in words not just screams. “He’s clearly terrified.”

“Of what?” Natalie demanded. “He wasn’t afraid of me earlier at the hotel. There’s no reason to be terrified now.”

Behind me there was silence. I could feel dozens of eyes all watching what was going on. Kylie’s face had turned pink with embarrassment. She rubbed her fingers on the edge of the podium where she’d been standing, trying to smile, but failing. I knew she was trying to think of something to say.

She was saved by Steve Berman who came out of the back. In gray trousers and a white button-down shirt and tie, he looked every inch the manager. His blonde hair was slightly messed as if he’d just run his hands through it. Maybe he had if he’d been concentrating on something when Isaac started screaming. He did not look pleased.

Kylie looked over at him and her cheeks turned pinker. I hoped that he wouldn’t be angry with her for not being able to handle this.
